A Legacy That Makes Room For Others
Everyone Has Something To Bring
Arturo O’Farrill | Arts, Culture & Media
For Grammy Award-winning musician Arturo O'Farrill, a lifetime devoted to music has become an opportunity to open doors for others. Through education, collaboration and a new cultural home taking shape in East Harlem, he is creating spaces where creativity can be shared, traditions can grow and the next generation can discover what it has to contribute.
The word that lingers is contribute. Arturo O’Farrill describes the cultural home he is helping create in East Harlem as a place “where the doors are always open for the community to gather, listen, contribute.” Everyone has something to bring. The music grows through the people who enter.
At 66, the Grammy Award-winning Pianist, Composer and Bandleader is giving that welcome a permanent address. Casa Belongó broke ground in February 2026 within Timbale Terrace, an affordable housing development. Its planned classrooms, rehearsal spaces and performance hall will bring music into the neighborhood’s everyday life, with free and low-cost instruction among its offerings.
That future is taking shape alongside work that is already happening. This spring, Arturo taught fourth and fifth graders in Brooklyn, joining a percussionist and bass player for five weeks of jazz lessons that included improvisation. A lifetime of musical experience became something children could explore for themselves.
How does a lifetime in music become an invitation for others to find their place within it? In the complete feature, Arturo reflects on the musical inheritance that shaped him, the family tradition continuing through his sons, and the opportunities he is creating for young musicians to carry that legacy forward in their own ways.
